Seasonal Influenza Update 2020

Seasonal Influenza Update 2020

Posted on August 3rd, 2020

It is Flu Time Soon!!!!

We will prioritize seasonal influenza vaccinations in this order:

  1. Patient who are over 65 years old (Sept 2020)
  2. Patients who are 6mths to 64 years old and are in the chronic medical conditions categories ( Sept 2020)
  3. Children aged 2-3 years old (Sept 2020)
  4. Pregnant women ( Sept 2020)
  5. All other patients who are 50 years old and under 64 years old** who have no known chronic medical conditions  ( 23 Nov 2020) **NOW BOOKING**

**Please note that people in the 50-64-year old age group who have no known chronic medical conditions can now book for the flu vaccination from 23 Nov 2020. We have had to prioritize, to ensure that those who are most at risk are vaccinated first.  Vaccine supply arrangements have been made.

We usually plan our flu campaign carefully as there are various factors at play. This year we expect it to be particularly challenging for the following reasons:

  •  Social distancing; patient and staff safety;  and infection control guidelines limit us in how may patients we can vaccinate.
  • An additional cohort has been announced by the Government,  who have also assured us that they will provide sufficient vaccine supplies for this.  This significant new group of people aged 50 to 64 years old will be eligible for the free flu vaccine and will be invited later in the season for a vaccination.
  • We are dependent on vaccine suppliers, for timely vaccine deliveries. These come at different times for different cohorts (vaccines dependent on cohort, ordered in Dec 2019). Child Flu vaccine is centrally supplied (was delayed last year to end of Oct 2019) and can only be ordered in Sept 2020. We are still awaiting specific information and information regarding vaccine supplies for the new significant group of over 50 years old, as added this year.
  • To facilitate the additional cohort additional capacity needs to be arranged during these unprecedented Covid-19 times and we have to prioritise in terms of those at greater risk.
  • PPE needs to be sourced as it is in short supply to ensure patient and staff safety is not compromised.

Please help us to help you by co-operating  and only telephone to book your seasonal flu appointment after you receive an SMS inviting you. Please rest assured that we will have enough vaccines.
